Ghana’s Gaming Commission awareness initiatives set the standards for responsible gambling. With the industry committing to sustainable best practices, players and operators are set to win.
In September 2024, the Gaming Commission of Ghana, the country’s regulatory authority for games of chance, designated the month as an awareness initiative to promote responsible gaming and highlight safer gambling tools.
The campaign theme was “Embracing Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) for a Sustainable Gaming Industry.”
The Gaming Commission asserts that operators are responsible for fostering responsible gaming practices that safeguard both players and the broader community through the ongoing enhancement of their systems.
Ghana’s Gaming Commission regularly undertakes informative awareness months to educate the public.
Gaming Commissioner Peter Mireku stated that authorities must not remain passive observers, highlighting the need for the Commission to increase its efforts to combat illicit gambling activities and prevent individuals under the legal age from participating.
Stakeholders in Ghana’s gaming industry have resolved to run responsible and sustainable businesses as part of ongoing efforts to give back to the communities they operate in and to contribute to the country’s development.
This resolution emerged as the central theme at a regulatory compliance workshop organised by a leading global sports betting brand and the Ghana Association of Sports Betting Operators (GHASBO) in June.
Speaking at the workshop, the Chief Executive of the Gaming Commission highlighted the significant growth in online betting and the introduction of new technologies and services within the industry, necessitating effective measures and continuing due diligence to mitigate fraud and legal risks.
He stressed that the industry needs to consider sustainability and how to give back and support the communities in which it operates.
The Gaming Commission of Ghana collaborates with various authorities, including the Ministry of Interior and the Inspector General of Police, to create an environment conducive to the flourishing of the casino and betting industry while ensuring responsible gambling practices are followed.
The Commission conducts sensitisation programs in public schools to educate students about the risks of underage gambling and promote responsible gaming habits.
The regulatory body also incorporates the use of technology, using Artificial Intelligence (AI) capabilities to implement preventative measures and promote a culture of partnership and collaboration with stakeholders.
Responsible gambling initiatives have a positive impact on both the industry itself and players. Implementing responsible gaming measures enhances the reputation of gaming operators, fostering trust among players and promoting customer loyalty.
Regulatory compliance helps operators avoid legal issues and avoid potential fines, and operators who prioritise responsible practices are less likely to face lawsuits related to problem gambling.
Market growth could also be seen as a positive to implementing best practices by operators, as those who may have been hesitant to engage in gaming activities due to concerns about addiction or unethical practices would view safer gambling practices as less risky.
Responsible gambling initiatives ensure that gaming environments are fair and transparent, giving players confidence in the integrity of the games they participate in and enhance the enjoyment level of the entertainment experience.
